A Little Agriculture, A Little Rodeo and a Little Pizza

We had a wonderful pizza party yesterday to celebrate selling over 100 coupon books. We joined Mrs. Jenson's class and snuggled up to watch a movie together. We had such a blast and LOVED the pizza.

Afterwards, we had the NDSU Rodeo Team come and present on agriculture and rodeo. The kids learned about what agriculture means to us. They shared what products come from different animals. Some of us were really surprised to know a football comes from a pig! They also shared a little about rodeo events and what expectations were held for each event such as staying on a bull for 8 seconds.

Next, we found our inner cowboy and practiced roping. The students were so brave and positive as we all tried to rope a dummy steer with  and without horns. I think we could have roped all day if they let us. Each child got a free ticket to the NDSU Bison Stampede Rodeo this weekend. Hopefully some of us can attend. We were so thankful for this experience.

I even was part of the action... and no, I didn't get it on the dummy. But some of the kids did.

Pumpkins, Turkeys and More

Good morning,

We are cruising right along and are almost near the end of October (Wow!). Thank you to EVERYONE for coming to conferences. We had 100% attend.

We want to give a HUGE shout out to our PTA. Not only is our classroom getting a new digital camera, but so are all the other classrooms. Which means... MORE pictures. If you haven't attended a PTA meeting yet, come check it out in November.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest:
The library is holding their annual pumpkin decorating contest modeled after a character from a book. The requirements for this contest have been sent home already, but if you need an update, let me know and I can send it home again. Pumpkins can start being brought in through the 29th. Judging takes place on the 30th.

Coupon Book Pizza Party:
Our class sold over 100 coupon books and has earned a pizza party. On Thursday, October 23rd is the day our pizza will be here. If you would like to send in a healthy side option to accompany our pizza, please let me know. Some ideas would be apple slices, veggies, bananas or baked chips. Also, the students will be able to bring in a caffeine free drink of their choice. If someone forgets, I always bring extra.

Red Ribbon Week:
Red Ribbon Week is in full force. Wednesday is crazy hair and sock day. Thursday is pj day. Friday is Spirit day (Westside T-shirt).

Other notes:

Walk to Read:
We are switching to integrated Social Studies so we will be keeping our kids for walk to read and building a 3D community. We are also getting student input on our Walk to Read model and taking a look at data to determine where to go from here.

Typing:
If your child can have computer access at home, please encourage them to practice typing at home. They need to pass each module with an 80% or higher. www.learning.com

Turkey in Disguise:
Gobble! Gobble! Our turkeys are coming home to be put in disguise. Students are encourage to disguise their turkeys and then write about it. Watch for the template to come home today.

We were having some extra fun with a brain break.

And finally... a little about what makes me happy. A conference day surprise from my husband.  It was a perfect way to end my day and start up conferences.

What a week!

What an interesting week! With no school on Wednesday, it sure felt odd coming back and having another 2 days. However, the kids were awesome on Thursday morning with a sub. I had a training to attend and I got nothing but great compliments from her. Way to go!

Here are our important updates:

Conferences:
Notes are going home today to remind you of your time. There is also a parent inventory to allow you to let me know some specifics of what you would like to discuss. We move pretty quickly in 15 minutes, so it is nice to know specifically what we should take more time discussing.

Book Fair:
Happens Monday and Tuesday during conferences, in the library. Feel free to stop in and check it out. Also, if you wish, there will be a teacher "wish list" that you can purchase books for our classroom to donate.

United Way Change Drive;
We currently are trying to raise money for United Way. We have a HUGE jar in our room that we are trying to fill with extra change. So, if you have some in your pocket, send it on in.

No School:
We do not have school next Thursday and Friday.

Positive Ticket Celebration:
Every 600 PAWsitive tickets our grade level receives, we earn a celebration. We have hit our first 600. So, on Monday the kids can bring a caffeine free drink to enjoy at our party.

Until my next round...
